JOIN YOUR FRIENDS FOR SHAMROCKS & SHENANIGANS AT BIRMINGHAM’S 40TH ANNUAL ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE!

St. Paricks Day Celebrations

The Idea Specialists® at The Retreat at Mountain Brook may have had a little help from their favorite leprechaun to find out what’s happening this St. Patrick’s Day in Birmingham, AL. Their advice? Get ready to eat, drink, and be green as you enjoy the shamrocks and shenanigans of this year’s St. Patrick’s Celebration in Birmingham, Alabama, with your Retreat at Mountain Brook friends! Organized by the Five Points South Alliance and Birmingham Irish Cultural Society, this year’s festivities will commence with the 10th annual Irish Flag Raising Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 5 p.m. at the flagpole in front of the Five Points Chik-fil-A—you won’t want to miss the Irish blessing! Then the fun will literally take to the streets with the city’s 40th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade Saturday, March 16. What began as a small gathering of Irish immigrants has grown into one of the largest of the holiday’s parades in the South. This year’s march, led by the Ian Sturrock Memorial Pipe Band, will start at 1:30 p.m. on 10th Avenue South along Brother Bryan Park, then turn left and travel up 20th Street South.   Get Ready To Be Seen In Green Both you and your four-legged companions will want to be seen in green as you make the scene, whether at the parade or actually on St. Patrick’s Day Sunday, March 17, when participating Five Points South restaurants and bars will offer Irish-themed food and drink specials, along with live entertainment. And why the green? Well, begosh and begorrah, it’s because Ireland is the Emerald Isle, of course! The Retreat at Mountain Brook, located just minutes away from the heart of the Magic City, is a very pet-friendly upscale apartment community, so of course our Idea Specialists™ couldn’t resist the idea of finding a cute green holiday costume for your very good doggo—a headband and bowtie combo! If you want something fun for yourself, but don’t want to break the bank, check out this fun shamrock dress that you can layer with tights and a jacket or sweater, depending on the unpredictable March weather, or this green short-sleeved button-down shirt with companion clover pattern.   Shamrock Shindig 2024 One other wee bit o’ fun for the weekend will be the Shamrock Shindig—food, drinks, photo booth, live music, and a balloon drop with prizes! Even better, the Friday, March 15, event at B&A Warehouse is for a great cause. All proceeds will go to support The Arc of Central Alabama, Alabama’s largest provider of services for people of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities.   Here’s To The History Of The Holiday—Sláinte!! St. Patrick’s Day commemorates the death of Ireland’s fifth-century patron saint. According to folklore, he introduced Christianity to the Irish—and banished snakes from the island! Another well-known legend is that he explained the religious Holy Trinity of Father, Son, & Holy Spirit using the three leaves of a shamrock, native Irish clover. “Paddy’s Day,” as it’s known across the pond, began as and still is a holiday during the Lenten season, but it’s not the same as it used to be. Beer company campaigns transformed it from a church-going holiday to a pint-raising one in the 1980s. If you want to join with other pubgoers in saying cheers to that in Gaelic, here’s where you can listen to a native speaker pronounce Sláinte! (Cheat Sheet: It’s a two-syllable word, first syllable “lawn” and second “cha”—for slawn-cha!)

Love is in the Air at the Retreat at Mountain Brook!

Happy Valentine's Day

Need some ideas about how to celebrate your Valentine/Galentine/Palentine this year? The Idea Specialists™ at The Retreat at Mountain Brook—one of Birmingham, Alabama’s most picturesque and luxurious apartment home communities—are here with ideas that go above and beyond a box of chocolates! Bonbon Hugs & Cocktail Kisses Not that there’s anything wrong with a box of chocolates, especially if they’re the bonbons from Chocolatá in Forest Park! Which will be even better if you savor them at home in comfort with a special Valentine’s Day cocktail like Love Potion No. 9, a triple berry pomegranate martini with strawberry vodka and Chambord—and a little dry ice for magically romantic presentation. Another fun one to try might be the Clover Club, a pink drink that pre-dates Prohibition that was created as the signature sip of a group of high-powered businessmen who met at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The sweet and tart concoction combines grenadine, gin, and lemon, and the classic egg white foam gives each sip creamy body and frothy texture. Of course champagnes and Proseccos are always good choices, and are available at a variety of price points at Highland Package Store on 20th Street South. And if you want to show that someone special in your life a little extra love, you could whisper sweet nothings in their ear while feeding them sweet somethings that you made yourself. Check out Delish for recipes for everything from cannoli bites to red velvet ice cream.   Romantic Dining Oh, wait, did the Retreat at Mountain Brook Idea Specialists™ just eat dessert first? They certainly did, LOL. But not to worry, they’ve got dinner covered, too, whether you want to eat in or go out on the town. One of the wonderful things about living at The Retreat at Mountain Brook is great kitchens with enough counter space to make cooking a truly enjoyable experience. It’s Delish again with the win for recipe ideas for tempting and tasty romantic meals. The Idea Specialists™ are real fans of their creamy steak fettucine paired with a winter rainbow panzanella salad of colorful, roasted squash and beets tossed in a tang-sweet dressing with fresh herbs, grapefruit, blue cheese, and toasted sourdough. Pretty and satisfying! No time to do the cooking yourself? No problem! Birmingham favorite Ashley Mac’s has lovebirds covered this year with their signature Sweetheart Bundle of bayou gourmet crab cakes with sauce, brown sugar bacon green beans, twice-baked mashed potatoes, sour cream biscuits, AND a six-pack their exclusive Valentine’s red velvet, wedding cake, and strawberry mini cupcakes. With multiple locations, you can pick your up at a location convenient to work or home.   Somewhere Special Sometimes you just want to celebrate somewhere special. This year, the Idea Specialists™ are making reservations at Bottega. The Dining Room Valentine’s Day menu offers incredible options for every course. Baked oysters with Tuscan spinach and focaccia breadcrumbs and baby artichokes agrodolce are just two of the starter choices, and entrees include a cioppino of lobster, Gulf fish, clams, and red wine, as well as a homemade pasta with braised pork belly and roasted vegetables. Dessert has simply got to be the chocolate torte with pistachio sauce and Valrhona dark chocolate, darling! Love is in the beer at Back Forty Birmingham! Chef Russ Bodner and Head Brewer James Vance have worked up a fabulous food menu for this Valentine’s Day, starting with snacks followed by several courses, paired of course with a few bubbles and beer. Lots of beer! Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner promptly at 7 p.m.; get tickets here. Or, party with the Young Professionals of Birmingham at the “Mix Her Up” Valentine’s Day Bash at Luna and enjoy drink specials, DJ beats, photo backdrops, giveaways, and fun along with the restaurant’s Latin  food from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.   Other Ideas Looking for other ideas of ways to mark the occasion, or simply to celebrate February? There’s everything from the good times rolling at the annual Ross Bridge Farmers Market Mardi Gras Market from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2024 to Valentine with Vulcan. CELEBRATE SUMMER POOLSIDE THIS 4TH OF JULY AT THE RETREAT AT MOUNTAIN BROOK—AND OUT & ABOUT IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA!

Retreat at Mountain Brook - Poolside

Celebrate summer poolside at The Retreat at Mountain Brook—and out and about in Birmingham, Alabama, where there’s always something fun to do!   Lounge In Luxury Our upscale apartment community’s three  resort-style saltwater pools are some of the coolest things about living here (no pun intended, LOL!). Lounge in luxury while snacking on some fresh fruit you picked up at the Farmers Market at Pepper Place and sipping on “the” cocktail of summer 2023, a Hugo Spritz. The refreshing drink is named after a boutique hotel in Florence, Italy, where it’s often used to welcome travelers when they arrive after a long day of hiking. With elderflower liqueur, usually St. Germain, as its signature, it’s an alternative to the more-common Aperol Spritz, which has its roots in nearby Padua. (You can pick up what you need for the recipe at Highland Package Store on Birmingham’s Southside.)   RECIPE FOR THE HUGO SPRITZ Ingredients Elderflower Liqueur (St. Germain) Sparkling Wine (Prosecco or Cava) Sparkling Water (or Club Soda) Mint (Leaves) Lime (Slices Directions To make one Hugo Spritz, start with a wine glass half full of ice. Pour in 1/2 ounce of elderflower liqueur. Top with 4 ounces of the sparkling wine, then finish with 1 ounce of sparkling water. Gently stir to combine. Taste a sip; add more sparkling water or wine to as desired. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and lime slices.   The Shindig: Otey’s Fest 2023 If you haven’t already, mark your calendars now for the annual Otey’s Tavern festival, set for Saturday, July 15, 2023—the cookout will kick off at 6 p.m. Headlining will be the renowned Robert Randolph Band, known for their energetic performances and innovative fusion of rock, funk, and soul. Talented local supporting acts will include the Will Stewart Band, T.U.B., and Gri Cashio. This year, to accommodate a larger audience, the event is moving from the traditional Otey’s parking lot location to the grass lawn across the street from the O’Neal Library in Crestline Village.   Take Me Out To the Ballgame If you’re in the mood for a classic summertime outing, plan to catch the Birmingham Barons in play at Regions Field. Peanuts, Cracker Jack, draft beer, and a hotdog and some popcorn will make your evening of hometown minor league baseball complete!
